An underage child cannot consent to be sexually abused. However, the Catholic Church and the government are claiming this as a defense.


A scathing report from Victim Support, a charity dedicated to helping victims of sexual abuse, has shed light on the Catholic Church and the government working to avoid paying compensation to child victims of sex abuse.

The government agency, Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme, and the Catholic Church are actively attempting to deny financial settlements against them, saying the victims have “consented” to the abuse by government agents and clergy — even if they were too young to
legally do so.

Lawyers representing victims have warned that this line of defense is becoming increasingly common.

One case that the charity Victim Support brought attention to involved a 12-year-old girl who was given alcohol, brought into woodland and then sexually assaulted by a 21-year-old male.

The girl was denied compensation because she had “voluntarily” gone into the woods with the man.

“No child ever gives their ‘consent’ to being abused, and the increased use of this line of defense, although still quite rare, is worrying,” said Anne Longfield, the Children’s Commissioner for England.

“I have contacted the Ministry of Justice previously and again recently about this issue and the Government should look urgently at what can be done to tackle it.”

As the Free Thought Project reported last year, former Canterbury Police Chief John Laroche was charged with sexually assaulting a former member of the Boscawen Police Explorers. His alleged victim was a 16-year-old girl.

The girl came forward with claims of disturbing sexual assault on multiple occasions and Laroche did not deny them. Instead, like the Catholic Church and the British government, he claimed his victim wanted it.

he Vatican has recalled one of its diplomats from the United States after federal officials gave them evidence that he was involved with child pornography.
The Washington Post reports that American officials presented the Vatican with evidence implicating the diplomat in a possible child pornography crime late last month, and the Vatican subsequently recalled him to the Holy See in Rome, where the church will conduct its own investigation. The Vatican also said that its officials are cooperating with foreign investigators to gather evidence in the case.
“In addition to being the seat of the Catholic church, the Vatican is also a sovereign nation located within the borders of Italy,” notes the Washington Post. “Pope Francis is both spiritual leader and head of state. Vatican diplomats in the United States have diplomatic immunity from prosecution for most crimes in the United States, like diplomats of all foreign nations.”
