I don't see him being depressed about it. he just seems to be focusing on his own issues and seems to have someone else on his mind. Saturn=he, has a mixed reception (exaltation) with Venus.
Perhaps it also has to do with the communication between you 3rd / 9th axis

If you treat him as Merc, I am not seeing him think about you/Sun a lot based on reception from Merc to Sun or to you as Moon.
Also, there is no aspect between Merc and Sun or between Merc and Moon.
If Merc were in the same sign as the Ascendant, I would say there is some interest from Merc, but Merc is in the next sign.
Mars is in his/11th house and rules your friend's the turned 11th house. Maybe he is involved with other friends right now?

Well if he's a friend (as you call him). Him/Mercury in your 1st house means he does think about you. Also, Mercury's antiscia is conjunct Chiron, so he's hurting too. Maybe you've bruised his ego by not responding to his messages.

Look it's quite evident (hence the horary) you still feel for the guy. So maybe you should push your own ego to one side and respond to his msg. Lifes too short for things left unsaid. A Venus Jupiter trine transit is still active right now so use this to your advantage and bury some hatchets.
