Is the North Node conjunct the Ascendant the same as North Node in the 1st house, and/or Aries?

The ascendant is the beginning, the cusp, of the 1st house.
Regarding Aries and the 1st, my understanding is that the association of the signs with the houses, Aries 1st, Taurus 2nd, etc, is a modern, 20th century idea. So some astrologers from the Modern School think Aries is connected with the 1st, since it is the first of spring and new beginnings, like the 1st house is the beginning of our life. The problem is that Aries is connected with spring only in the northern hemisphere. [And this is without consideration of the phenomenon called Precession of the Equinoxes, which I won't go into here]
What I would say then is that yes you can associate that NN with the 1st house with complete confidence. Less so with the sign of Aries.

Thank you so much! It's strange. I was born with a very weak sense of self. It is only now, in my 30's that I am cultivating a more, firmer, sense of self!

You are welcome.
Really in a way that is not surprising. It take us a while to live into our ascendant and even longer to live into our NN. The NN being in the 1st may suggest that reaching for our aspiration or what we are called toward in this life may be a more conscious matter of concern for you, but not necessarily that you will know it or achieve it early on.
In a sense we don't begin wake up into maturity, into who we are, until after our first Saturn return around the age of 28 or so...And that is the just beginning.
To my mind, you seem wonderfully on schedule.

I also notice that people hate it when I'm overly sweet, or nice, like going towards my South Node conjunct my Descendant, too far, and people pleasing, too far. It feels 'off,' and feels 'imbalanced.' Almost like people can sense my many past lives of people pleasing, too much. It's a karmic imbalance. So, I have to learn how to honor myself, more, in this lifetime.

Yes, finding the balance, the wide middle path, between what you inherently know/do and what you are called to realize in this life is the way!

I also don't attract a lot of friends. It's an independence lifetime, I guess.
I think that we make friends more than we attract them?
Making friends is a more active endeavor than attracting...so perhaps there may be some learning to make friends that you are called to in this life...?
All depending upon the rest of your chart, of course.
